Chaitra: The Season of New Beginnings 🌸

The Land & The Story: Welcome to the first month of the Indian calendar! Chaitra usually starts in late March when the Vasanta Ritu (Spring) is in full swing. The trees are getting fresh green leaves, and birds like the Koel are singing happily. This month is named after the bright star Chitra. In many parts of India, people celebrate the New Year during this month. In Maharashtra, it is called Gudi Padwa, and in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, it is known as Ugadi. It’s a time to clean our houses, wear new clothes, and eat a special mixture of sweet, sour, and bitter flavors to remember that life has all kinds of moments! It is also the month of Ram Navami, the birthday of Lord Rama.

🌍 Conservation Corner: Chaitra is when many flowers bloom. You can help by keeping a bowl of water in your balcony for thirsty birds as the weather starts getting warmer.

🌍 Knowledge Check:

  1. Which season (Ritu) corresponds to the month of Chaitra?
  2. Name one festival celebrated in Chaitra.

Big Word: Equinox - The time of year when day and night are of equal length, which happens right around the start of Chaitra!
