🎨 Heritage DIY: Decorate Your Own Puja Thali 🌺
A Puja Thali is a decorated tray used during Hindu prayers (puja) and festivals. Decorating the thali is a beautiful way to express devotion and celebrate festive joy.
What You'll Need
- A small plate (steel, paper, or plastic)
- Acrylic paints and brushes
- Small mirror pieces (shisha), beads, or sequins
- Glue
Step-by-Step
- Clean the plate and let it dry completely.
- Paint the entire surface of the plate with a bright base color like red, yellow, or orange. Let the paint dry.
- Once the base is dry, use contrasting colors to paint traditional patterns, like flowers, mango shapes (paisley), or a swastika symbol in the center.
- Apply dots of glue around the rim and the center design.
- Carefully place the mirror pieces or beads onto the glue dots to add a festive sparkle.
- Let the thali sit until the glue and paint are completely dry.
The Indian Connection
In Indian culture, festivals like Diwali and Raksha Bandhan are incomplete without a Puja Thali. It traditionally holds essential items such as a diya (lamp), incense sticks, kumkum (red powder), rice grains, and flowers. Each item has its own meaning, and the beautifully decorated thali prepares a sacred space for the ritual.
