Jyeshtha: The Mighty Summer Month ☀️

The Land & The Story: Phew! It’s getting hot! Jyeshtha (May-June) is the third month and the peak of Grishma Ritu (Summer). The word 'Jyeshtha' actually means 'the eldest' or 'the biggest,' and it fits because the days are very long and the sun is very strong. This month is named after the bright red star Jyeshtha (also known as Antares). During this month, many people celebrate Vat Purnima, where women tie threads around a Banyan tree to pray for their families. It is also the month when people celebrate Ganga Dussehra, the day the holy river Ganga descended to Earth to bring water to a dry land.

🌍 Conservation Corner: With the sun so strong, water in ponds and lakes dries up. You can save water at home by taking shorter showers and making sure no taps are leaking.

🌍 Knowledge Check:

  1. What does the word 'Jyeshtha' mean?
  2. Which river’s arrival is celebrated during this month?

Big Word: Solstice - The day when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, making it the longest day of the year (usually in Jyeshtha!).
