Sant Eknath: The Kind Teacher of Paithan 🚩

The Land & The Story: Put on your explorer’s hat, because we are heading to the banks of the Godavari river to meet Sant Eknath! Eknath lived in a town called Paithan. He was a very wise man who believed that everyone is equal. In his time, people were sometimes divided by their castes, but Eknath would happily sit and eat with anyone, no matter who they were. He wanted to teach people about goodness in a way that was fun, so he created 'Bharuds'—theatrical folk songs that used stories and jokes to share important lessons.

Eknath was also famous for his incredible kindness to all living things. One famous story tells how he was carrying holy water from the Ganga river to a temple far away. On the way, he saw a poor donkey lying in the hot sand, dying of thirst. Without a second thought, Eknath gave all the holy water to the donkey! People were shocked, but Eknath smiled and said that serving a thirsty animal is the same as serving God. He also worked hard to keep the Marathi language alive and beautiful by writing many books and poems.

🌍 Conservation Corner: Sant Eknath’s story about the donkey reminds us to be kind to all animals. We can help by putting out a bowl of clean water for birds and stray animals during hot summer days.
