Warkari Tradition: The Joyful Journey 🚩

The Land & The Story: Pack your walking shoes and a small cymbal, because we are joining one of the world's oldest and most musical walks! The Warkaris are devotees of Lord Vitthal (also called Vithoba), who live mostly in Maharashtra. For over 700 years, they have followed a beautiful tradition called the Pandharpur Wari. Every year, during the month of Ashadha, thousands of pilgrims embark on a grand journey, walking hundreds of miles from different towns to reach the holy temple of Pandharpur.

The stars of this long walk are the Palkhis (Palanquins) that carry the silver footprints of great saints like Saint Dnyaneshwar (starting from Alandi) and Saint Tukaram (starting from Dehu). As they trek through the countryside, pilgrims sing beautiful devotional songs called Abhangas, play the Taal (cymbals), and beat the Mridangam (drum). In the Wari, everyone is treated as equal. Pilgrims call each other "Mauli," which means mother, showing love and respect to every person they meet. The walk ends at the Vithoba Temple on the banks of the Chandrabhaga river, where everyone celebrates the festival of Ashadhi Ekadashi with great joy and dancing!

🌍 Conservation Corner: The Wari is not just about walking; it's about caring for Mother Earth too! In recent years, "Green Waris" have become popular. Pilgrims now work together to avoid using plastic, use eco-friendly plates, and help clean the paths and riverbanks as they travel.

🌍 Knowledge Check:

  1. Who are the two famous saints whose Palkhis lead the main Wari processions?
  2. What is the special name ("Mauli") that Warkaris use to address one another?
  3. On the banks of which river is the Vithoba Temple located?

Big Word: Abhanga - A form of devotional poetry sung in praise of Lord Vitthal. The name means "unbroken," because these songs share a message of love that stays true forever.
