The Nilgiri Tahr: Facts about India for Kids

Name:
Date:

🗺️ Expedition: The Nilgiri Tahr 🐐

The Land & The Story: We are trekking high up into the Nilgiri Hills of South India! Here lives the Nilgiri Tahr, a type of wild mountain goat. They are amazing climbers and can walk on very narrow and steep rocky cliffs where other animals cannot go. The word 'Nilgiri' means 'Blue Mountains' because of the purple-blue flowers that bloom there every 12 years. These goats have short, coarse fur and curved horns. They like to wake up early in the morning to graze on the green grass of the mountain meadows before the mist covers the hills.

💡 Big Word: Habitat - The natural place or environment where an animal or plant usually lives.

🌍 Conservation Corner: When we go trekking in the mountains, we must always bring our trash back with us to keep the Tahr's home clean and beautiful.
