Moon Phases: The Hindu Lunar Month 🌙

The Land & The Story: Pack your telescopes, explorers! Today we are looking at the sky to see how the Moon plays "Hide and Seek." In the Indian calendar, a month isn’t just a number on a page; it follows the Moon as it circles the Earth, which takes about 29.5 days. Each month is split into two "fortnights" or Pakshas.

First comes Shukla Paksha (the Bright Half), where the Moon grows bigger and bigger (waxing) until it becomes a glowing Purnima (Full Moon). This is when we celebrate festivals like Raksha Bandhan! Then comes Krishna Paksha (the Dark Half), where the Moon gets smaller (waning) until it disappears completely on Amavasya (New Moon), which is when we light up our homes for Diwali! Each day in these halves is called a Tithi. There are 15 Tithis in each Paksha. Some special days include Ganesh Chaturthi (the 4th day) for Lord Ganesha, and Ashadhi Ekadashi (the 11th day) which is a big day for pilgrims in Maharashtra!

🌍 Conservation Corner: Many animals, like sea turtles and owls, depend on the Moon's light to find their way. We can help by turning off extra outdoor lights at night so the night sky stays natural and dark for them.

🌍 Knowledge Check:

  1. What are the two halves of the lunar month called?
  2. On which special Moon day do we celebrate Diwali?

Big Word: Paksha - One of the two fortnights (15-day periods) in a Hindu lunar month.
