The Great Indian Hornbill: Facts about India for Kids

πŸ—ΊοΈ Expedition: The Great Indian Hornbill 🐦

The Land & The Story: Look up into the tall trees of the Western Ghats! You might see a very large bird with a bright yellow and black beak. This is the Great Indian Hornbill. On top of its beak, it has a heavy-looking "helmet" called a casque. Even though it looks heavy, it is actually very light! These birds are the "farmers of the forest" because they eat a lot of fruit and drop the seeds far away, helping new trees grow. When they fly, their wings make a loud "whooshing" sound that can be heard from far away.

πŸ’‘ Big Word: Casque - A hollow, helmet-like structure on the bill of a hornbill bird.

🌍 Conservation Corner: Hornbills need very old, tall trees to build their nests. By saving old forests, we make sure these beautiful birds have a home to stay in.

🌍 Knowledge Check:

  1. What is the helmet-like part on the bird's beak called?
