🎨 Heritage DIY: The Cosmic Dancer (Nataraja Silhouette) 🕺

Have you ever seen a statue of Lord Shiva dancing inside a circle of fire? That is Nataraja, the King of Dance! The Chola kings of South India were famous for making these beautiful bronze sculptures. They represent Shiva’s cosmic dance, which creates and protects the whole universe.

    What You'll Need

    • A piece of stiff cardboard (like from a cereal box)
    • Gold paint or a bright yellow marker
    • Scissors
    • Black paper or black paint for the background
    • Glue

    Step-by-Step

    1. Trace the Circle: Draw a large circle on your cardboard. This represents the Prabha Mandala (the circle of fire).
    2. Draw the Silhouette: Inside the circle, draw a stick figure of Shiva in the "Nataraja" pose: one leg lifted, four arms spread out (one holding fire, one a drum).
    3. Cut it Out: Carefully cut around the circle and the figure. If cutting the figure is too hard, you can just cut the circle and draw Shiva inside with a black marker.
    4. Go for Gold: Paint or color your cutout entirely in gold. In ancient India, bronze was often polished until it shone like gold!
    5. Add the Fire: Use a red or orange marker to draw little flames all around the edge of the circle.
    6. Display: Glue your golden silhouette onto a piece of black paper to make it pop!

    The Indian Connection

The Nataraja is one of the most recognized symbols of India worldwide. It shows how Indian sculptors could capture movement and balance in heavy metal. The drum (Damru) in his hand represents the first sound of creation, and his raised hand means "Do not be afraid."

💡 Big Word: Shilpa (शिल्प) - The ancient Indian term for arts, crafts, and the skill of making sculptures.

⚠️ Safety Note: Ask an adult to help you with the scissors when cutting the cardboard.
